Kenner Observatory RIP

After many years of operation the Kenner Observatory has been closed. After Hurricane Katrina, leaks in the roof were never fixed and the building has been getting worse and worse with sheetrock falling down and fears of mold growth. Recent requests for the city to repair the damage resulted in the city deciding the building was not fit for occupancy and requesting that we cease operation of the observatory.

Saturday afternoon we held a work party to remove PAS property from the building and relocate it to a storage room at UNO. I would like to thank the many members who assisted with the work. We also found a time capsule from the observatory's founding and we will open it at this year's Christmas Party.

While it is sad to see Kenner Observatory come to an end, the memories of Kenner will never be forgotten. I've heard many stories of how the observatory was the reason people joined the PAS, or how the observatory helped them get to know other members, etc. I invite members to post stories here about the observatory's founding and how it affected your membership in the club. Perhaps Ken can use some of these in the newsletter.
