PAS President Message

The PAS August Meeting will be held at the UNO Lakefront Campus Science Building, Room 1001. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM on the night of the 20th. This month's presentation will be "Prime Focus DSLR Imaging" by David Pavlich. This should be an interesting and informative presentation. If you haven't been to a PAS Meeting in awhile come out and join us.

The following was posted by Jamie Wallis on the PAS Message Board. While we believe the impact on LPMOS will be minimal, we are currently looking into the situation:

After several delays, the opening of Bogue Chitto State Park is scheduled for August 28, said Sharon Broussard, public information director for Louisiana State Parks, in a news release. Boardwalks and piers are features on the 11 lakes at Bogue Chitto State Park. The park, about 8 miles south of Franklinton, originally was scheduled to open late last fall, but was held up because of bad weather and construction delays. It then was rescheduled to open in May, but again had to wait for a two-mile stretch of road leading into the park to be paved.

The $16.4 million project, which is being funded by capital outlay measures, will have "four upland cabins and a lodge overlooking a 90-foot bluff, 81 RV camping sites and a group camp for overnight visitors," according to the release. It will have 11 lakes with several types of fish, and land that is home to deer, rabbits, turtles and wild turkeys.

There will be 7 miles of nature trails, and visitors will be able to tube and canoe down the Bogue Chitto River.

The park, which encompasses 1,786 acres, is at 17049 State Park Blvd., which is off Louisiana 25 and about 25 miles north of Covington.

We are also hoping that we may be able to help with some stargazing events at the park.
